Tanya Gernburd

Tanya is an accomplished music professional with years of teaching experience in theory, history, solfege, and piano.

In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Tanya has written several solfege workbooks, music history articles for newspapers, and served as a commentator for music performance programs and documentaries for radio and television stations.

Originally from Tashkent, USSR, Tanya obtained her education at a State College for Music Education and completed State Conservatory with a Masters in Music.

In Hamilton, she taught at the Caskey School of Music and McMaster University, in addition to being on the faculty of the Hamilton Suzuki School of Music for 30 years. Tanya is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) and an affiliate teacher at The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). In her practice, Tanya uses Suzuki and traditional European methods, and teaches all levels of piano, theory, harmony, history, counterpoint and analysis. She trains students for RCM examinations and competitions and over the last thirty years, has prepared more than 400 students for Royal Conservatory exams.

Methodology

Tanya's methods focus on the unique abiltities and learning paths of each student, to cultivate the love for and appreciation of music. This is grounded on the belief that students have superior potential that is realized through structured musical programs in a supportive and trusting environment. Through guided mentorship, students are taken on a journey to help them gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of music, while building on on their talents and skills. Parents are encouraged and shown how to become role models to foster ongoing learning and development.
